$100 million grant from World Bank for Bangladesh

The World Bank has recently approved a grant of $100 million for Bangladesh, to set up and improve water supply and sanitation systems in 30 Bangladesh municipalities. The project has been named "Municipal Water Supply and Sanitation Project" and will benefit about 600,000 people living in small towns by providing them with safe water through piped water supply systems. These 30 municipalities in Bangladesh currently do not have proper piped water systems and this project will establish proper water infrastructures, including water treatment facilities, water storage facilities, transmission and distribution pipe networks, and house connections including meters. About 87 percent of households in Bangladesh have access to various purified water sources but only 10 percent gets purified water supply through pipelines. Mercy Tembon, World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan said, "With Bangladesh's rapid urbanization, both small towns and big cities need to improve their infrastructures, including water and sanitation systems, to cater to the growing population. Water and sanitation systems are an integral part of a modern city. This project will contribute to the government's goal of expanding piped water coverage in municipal areas". This project will also help the municipalities to develop and improve their sanitation and drainage systems.
