19th edition of New York Indian Film Festival

From its inception in 2001, New York Indian Film Festival has been screening 40 Indian films, or films from the Indian subcontinent every year and has been appreciated by many. The Film Festival has previously screened acclaimed movies like ‘Monsoon Wedding’ and ‘The Namesake’ by Mira Nair, ‘Water’ by Deepa Mehta from her Element’s Trilogy, ‘The Japanese Wife’ and ‘Iti Mrinalini’ by Aparna Sen and many more. The 19th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival celebrates the independent films, diaspora films and thought-provoking works by filmmakers. The Festival began its journey for the year on Tuesday, with Rohena Gera directed 2018 film ‘Sir’, starring Tillotoma Shome and Vivek Gomber. The event started on 7th may with Bengali, Assamese, Tamil, Punjabi, Telegu celebrating the diversity rooted in India, and also its subcontinents, and to bring the cultural diversity to New York. This year’s Festival line-ups include short films, documentaries, features. NYIFF Director Aseem Chhabra said that NYIFF's line-up this year includes 29 narrative, 3 documentaries, and 32 short films and will also feature 7 World Premieres along with an International Premiere and 5 US premieres. The emphasis of the NYIFF this year is centered on the Indian Language film Ritesh Batra, named ‘Photograph’, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra; and the closing film being ‘The Last Color’ by Vikas Khanna, starring Neena Gupta in the lead. According to reports, with significance to Mother’s Day, on the closing night of the festival, audiences will wear pink, to celebrate Khanna’s film. After making headline in Sundance Film Festival, ‘Blinded by the Light’ will have its New York debut. Among other films, ‘URI: The Surgical Strike’, ‘Draupadi Unleashed’, ‘The Bose Family’, ‘Sindhustan’, ‘Urojahaj’ are a few.
