97th birth anniversary of R. K. Laxman

India’s most celebrated cartoonist, R. K.Laxman was born on 24th October 1921 in Mysore. He became famous for his creation ‘The Common Man’ and his humorous cartoon strip ‘You Said It’ which came out in 1951.

Many years ago the common man, Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Laxman said that he does not remember wanting to do anything but draw. But the common man himself wasn’t a silent spectator as his sharp wit spared no one. He immortalized the hapless 'Common Man' and his satire entertained generations for several decades.

He received the Padma Vibhushan in 2005 and was honored with Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts in 1984.

Unfortunately, he passed away in 2015 but his cartoons still have great relevance in the society and carry on his legacy such was his vision.

On his 97th birth anniversary today,we salute the cartoonist who never held back.
