Artificial intelligence can now predict lightning strike

The use of artificial intelligence or AI in various fields has been developed and updated in the recent decade. Its applications are wide, including medical diagnosis and remote sensing.   Recently, scientists have found a new application of AI where lightning can be predicted beforehand.

The new artificial intelligence system can tell about a lightning strike within a 30 kilometer radius up to 30 minutes in advance. Scientists say that this system is very accurate as well as cheap and inexpensive.  The journal of Atmospheric Sciences has recently released an article about this new artificial intelligence system. It describes the working of the system which uses a combination of standard meteorological data and artificial intelligence.

The effort to invent lightning prediction systems is not new. Scientists have been trying for years to build a system that would be cost effective as well accurate in predicting lightning strike. And this is obviously not surprising, given how harmful a lightning strike can be. If we get to know about a lightning strike beforehand, we can not only save hundreds of lives, but safeguard our property, forests and wildlife. “The systems already invented are slow, complex and expensive, which makes them inefficient to accurately predict lightning. The one recently invented by us uses data from any weather stations that makes us capable of covering any remote stations as required, without any communication network”, says  Amirhossein Mostajabi, a PhD student  who created the system.

The researchers on an interview reveal exactly how their new system works. “ The new method uses a machine learning algorithm that has been trained to recognize conditions that lead to lightning”, says one of the researchers from Ecole Polytechnique federale de Lausanne in Switzerland.  This method thus proves to be a quick and easy fix to destruction caused by lightning.
