Australia experiences heaviest rainfall since ’92

The east coast of Australia has received a record amount of torrential rainfall in the last few days. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Sydney has experienced the heaviest rainfall in a day since 1992. The heavy downpour has put out several wildfires taking place in different parts of Australia but it has caused severe property damages and widespread power outages. Sydney has received 176 millimetres (7 inches) of rainfall in the last two days which has broken all past records. Meteorologists have reported that another 200 millimetres of rainfall is expected in some areas in the next few days. Environmentalists are, however, worried that drinking water supplies might be contaminated by the flooding as debris and ash from the devastating wildfires are getting mixed into the water supply sources. The New South Wales water authority reported that they are keeping an eye to monitor the water quality to assess whether extra measures are needed to control ash and sediment left from the wildfires. This huge amount of rainfall has increased the level of water in the dams of New South Wales State to 62% from 42% a week ago. The recent rainfall has also extinguished the Currowan Fire on the New South Wales south coast which continued to burn for 74 days straight and destroyed 499,621 hectares of land and 312 homes.
