Britain’s new internet regulations

Britain is planning to regulate the internet content in the country and to issue penalties against companies that do not conform to Britain’s rules and regulations. The country already has a media regulator known as Ofcom, but its responsibilities are to be boosted in order to keep the internet activities of the country on check. The government will introduce new policies which will be implemented by the media regulator Ofcom in order to force Facebook, YouTube and other internet sites to do more to police their platforms. Social networking sites will also be issue penalties if they do not take necessary actions to combat harmful and illegal terrorist and child abuse content. The government had earlier raised a proposal to block access to websites and make individual executives legally liable for harmful content on their online platforms. This proposal would now be implemented through the boosting of Ofcom. Nicky Morgan, the secretary of Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said, “We will give the regulator the powers it needs to lead the fight for an internet that remains vibrant and open but with the protections, accountability and transparency people deserve”. The government of Britain has reported that it would release further details regarding this soon.
