Centre Rejects State’s Proposal To Rename Itself ‘Bangla’

The Centre has yet again refused West Bengal’s state proposal to rename itself ‘Bangla’. The Mamata Banerjee administration had proposed before also way back in 2011 and then again in 2016 and now. However, the Centre is suggesting another name favored buy the state unit of BJP-‘Paschimbanga’. Incidentally, the first proposal placed in 2011 was to rename the state name to ‘Paschimbanga’. But it was rejected by the UPA-2 government. The 2016 proposal to change the name to ‘Bangla’, ‘Bengal’, ‘Bangal’ in Bengali, English and Hindi respectively was turned down by the NDA administration. The logic behind rejecting the name ‘Bangla’ as cited by the Modi administration is its similarity to Bangladesh.
