The yellow gem weighs 552-carat has been unearthed by Dominion Diamond Mines and Rio Tinto Group at a mine in Canada’s frozen North. The Yellow gem resemblesa chicken-egg and currently on a way for auction.The 552-carat gem is considered to be three times the size as the next largest stone ever found in Canada.
According to reports, this discovery is the seventh biggest this century and would be among the 30 largest stones ever unearthed. Well, the biggest stone ever unearthed was the 3,106 carat Cullinan, found near Pretoria in South Africa in the year 1905. This diamond was cut into several polished gems and the two large chunk- Great Star of Africa and the Lesser Star of Africa currently set in the Crown Jewels of Britain. During an interview, Durgin said, “It’s very hard to give a ballpark estimate. It all depends on, again, the cutting and the resulting stone it ends up.” Stating it as ‘Miracle and Unique discovery, Durgin is quite astonished how the stone survived the mining process. In 2015, Rio Tinto diamond mine unearthed a 187.7-carat gem- quality diamond from Diavik Foxfire, and this year good times arrived at Dominion.
