China’s gift to Sri Lanka

China has recently gifted a warship to Sri Lanka due to its deepening military cooperation with the island nation. The warship which has been gifted by China is a frigate 'P625’. China commissioned this 2,300-tonne type 053 frigate warship into China's People's Liberation Army Navy in 1994. The navy decommissioned this warship back in 2015. Now, it has been gifted to Sri Lanka to enhance the surveillance capabilities of its navy. China has also announced that it would deliver nine diesel trains to Sri Lanka shortly. The frigate 'P625' has already arrived in Colombo last week and the Sri Lankan navy has reported that this warship will be used mainly for offshore patrol, environment monitoring, and anti-piracy combats. Sri Lanka is currently facing various maritime difficulties mainly because of unlawful acts including drug trafficking and with the addition of this warship into its fleet Sri Lankan navy’s capabilities will be enhanced. During the welcome reception of the warship, Sri Lankan Navy Commander Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva expressed his gratitude towards China and said that the Sri Lankan navy would consider this gift as a symbol of good friendship between the two nations.
