Delhi Metro To Run On Sun

Delhi is all set to set an example for all by starting its first solar power operated metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has received 27 MW power from the Madhya Pradesh-based Rewa Solar Power Project. Delhi intends on running 100% green energy metro rail network. If that happens then it will be the world’s first such network.

The DMRC said that to mark the beginning of this new arrangement, the managing director of DMRC Dr. Mangu Singh traveled in a metro powered by solar energy. Dr. Singh was accompanied by Manu Srivastav, Chairperson, Rewa Ultra Mega Solar, Upendra Tripathi, Director General, International Solar Alliance, and other senior officials.

A senior official said,

Till now, solar power generated by roof-top solar plants installed in DMRC premises were utilized for auxiliary requirements such as lighting and air conditioning of stations, depots. But now solar power coming from Rewa would also be used for operations of trains

The DMRC has started with 27 MW power from the Rewa Project but has plans of increasing it 99 MW. This will save both money and the environment.
