Popularly known as Manificient Mary, Mangte Chungneijang was born on 1st March 1983, in the northeastern state of Manipur. She developed an early enthusiasm for athletics since childhood and she got more serious after the success of Dingko Singh, whom she idolized. It would be hard for you to believe that this boxing sensation is a high school dropout. Eventually, she completed her schooling via alternate ways and even graduation.

Her career started in 2000 after her victory in Manipur state women’s boxing championship. Initially, she had to face a lot of obstacle from her orthodox family. At the age of only 18 she made her international debut at AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in US, claiming silver medal. She became the first female boxer to clinch a record sixth gold medal at the World Championships. She has bagged gold medal at Asian Women’s Boxing Championship and at Venus Women’s Box Cup. Among her more established achievements were gold medal at Asian Women’s Boxing Championship (2010), she held the Queen’s Baton at 2010 Commonwealth Games in India. She clinched bronze medal at 2012 London Olympics and gold medal at 2014 Asian Games, which bought more fame to India and her. She is the recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award (Boxing) in 2003 and Padma Shree (Sports) in 2006. A real life fighter Mary Kom founded MC Mary Kom Boxing Academy in her home state to encourage and help thousands of young aspirants in achieving their dreams in boxing.
