Dream On, until they Come True

When young, every children keeps a dream of becoming something when they grow up, which they have come to adore in their childhood. Dreams provide us with certain purposes, which shape us throughout our growing age. Some get to their dreams with help and backing, some don’t, while some make history. 

Resident of a remote village in the hilly terrain of Dang, Gujrat; 25-year-old Sarita Gayakwad, daughter of a firm labourer, had a distant dream of becoming an athlete with the sheer urge to provide financial backing to her family. The dream of becoming a sportsperson first lighted upon her when she was in school. With both mother Ramuben and father Lakhsman Bhai being farm labourers the family was finding it hard to make ends meet and provide for their children’s education. Her village providing basic education to kids till grade 4 helped a little. Living in school hostels, she excelled in Kho Kho and made national appearance in sports in 2017. Winning competitions in school and receiving praises from teaches and friends, paved way for a bigger dream. Challenges never stopped her from running, as she kept preparing for her dream barefooted, unable to afford quality shoes for sports. 

Taking advice from her coaches of National Championship, she went forward and bagged herself an opportunity of to perform at Khel Mahakumbh, a local sports championship launched by the government. Her efforts spoke on her behalf when she took home almost 5 gold medals and prize money of Rs. 25,000 from the competition. The money sparked more interest within her to pursue career which will ensure some help to family. With triumph trailing behind her, she was told to join the Sports Authority of Gujarat’s Center of Excellence, Nadiad for proper training and food which was hard to acquire at her home. After 2 years of training, she was finally ready to participate in the National Camp of Patiala and earned her selection to the Common Wealth Games in Australia. In 2018, she debuted in the Asian Games held in Jakarta and she proved her worth and lived her dream by winning a gold medal in the 4×400 metre team relay

Sartita Gayakwad also known as the Dung Express, not just made the country proud with her contributions of becoming the first girl of Gujrat to win gold in a platform like this, but also provided hope and inspiration to all of those who still dream on.
