Endobot for Pipeline Leakage by IIT Madras

Researchers from IIT Madras came with an extraordinary invention to curb the rising water scarcity issues all over the world. Centre for Non-destructive Evaluation in IIT Madras has developed a robot, named Endobot, for the sole purpose of checking pipeline for leakages and other problems and soon to be marketed by an IIT Madras incubated startup, Solinas Integrity, founded by the researchers. Endobot can check on various problems occurring whether on water transport pipes that suffer low maintenance and negligence for several years resulting into a leakage often and pipe connections that have not be sanctioned officially which mostly develop leakage in later years can easily be identified, and measures can be taken at low cost by the invention of Endobot. Endobot scarcely looks like a small tank with four wheels connected using a conveyor belt. According to reports, the robot is said to be 6 inches high and can work inside a pipe with a diameter of at least 8 inches. It is normally tethered from the entry point of the pipe without stalling. With a speed of 15 cm per second, Endobot also has laser-based techniques to examine the pipeline while moving, and also records everything through a video camera installed in it. Endobot is expected to go through some updating to add ultrasonic and electromagnetic sensors to help in finding out whether the pipes develop crack or corrosion on the outer side. International market has been looking forward to small robots and Endobot is in talks with urban corporation and municipalities to try and use it for pipeline problems.
