Enlightening Young Mind’s with Gender Equality

All humans are born equal. They are to be treated equally in front of the law and order, nevertheless their caste, sex, race, religion etc. But still this division created by men only, seems to have deep rooted sentiments and beliefs among most, which brings forth the discrimination we still see or face in our daily lives. One such evil that have plagued our society for centuries is gender discrimination, while the fight for equality still fails to make an impact to the prevailing beliefs.

India is diverse country, home to billions of people and their diverse cultures, religions, languages, but it also has a deep rooted patriarchy and misogyny raving on its society and mostly the rural parts. In Indian scenario it is common for a woman to learn and do the household chores while the man sits at home or does other work involving the outside world. Apart from that, woman in too much physical games or armed forces or even as driver or pilot is often looked down upon with surprise or a mere inside joke as to many question a women’s potential in field rather than inside four walls of a house.

However, with the rise of feminism and gender equality this instances have come to the light, and it was urged to people to treat every human equally and not giving one particular person or gender a special treatment on any occasion. But still the effects were not up to the mark, as the prevailing mental set back was hard to tarnish. So to curb the problem, young minds were needed to learn things differently so the new generation can make a difference. Maharashtra State Curriculum Board, Balbharati, took a commendable step to close on the gap between gender equality, with portraying both men and women doing different things as part of life and in a progressive light, in their textbooks.

In an attempt to break the stereotypes, The Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research, added in their Class II textbook examples like; A man and women are seen cleaning vegetables while sitting next to each other; an another exam a woman as a doctor and as a traffic cop; in another example, a man is seen as a chef, while another image shows a man ironing clothes. These examples show priority of both household chores and outside works, and both the genders participating in their respective jobs individually and excelling. This step will nourish the young minds to question the norms set by the society and have a clear understanding about men and woman to be equal to each other and participate in life tasks with equal contribution and rights as well.
