Get a driving license without a degree

On Tuesday the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways removed the criterion of minimum educational qualification for obtaining a driving license. The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 states that a driver needs to be class 8 pass. The ministry released a statement declaring the new law that said,

“In a move to benefit skilled persons from economically underprivileged sections of the society, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to remove the requirement of minimum educational qualification for driving a transport vehicle.”

There are many youths who are unemployed but have skills to be a driver coming from economically underprivileged sections of society. the revised law will provide jobs such as youths and help in meeting the shortage of 22 lakh drivers in the transport and logistics department. It will open up a number of opportunity for those who pursue driving for livelihood. The proposal was kept by the Haryana government in front of the ministry thinking about the people dependent on earnings from driving in the state’s Mewat region.

Although the Rajasthan High court countered this decision by saying that any driver unable to read signboards, warning signs and other signals would lose their license. The drivers need to pass the skill test that includes reading signs and performing logistical duties of reporting safety hazards. The government said that driving is a matter of skill rather than educational qualification.
