Give Way or Give Fine!

The Cabinet is going to take serious steps by levying hefty fines and penalties on those who are not taking traffic regulations seriously. The new amendment in the Motor Vehicle Act proposed by the cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As per the amendments, the new bill will imply a hefty fine on traffic defaulters. One of the notable changes to the Motor Vehicle Act includes a penalty of Rs 10,000 to those who do not give way to an ambulance on the road.

The reform in the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 will bring a similar fine on those driving with a suspended license. Penalties will range across offences like drunken driving, dangerous driving, over speeding and overloading.

These fines were proposed by transport ministers from 18 different states and has gotten approval from Rajya Sabha. Below are the proposed fines by the cabinet.

Over speeding- Rs 1000 to 2000

Driving without Insurance- Rs 2000

Driving without helmet – Rs 1000 + 3 months license suspension

Drunken driving – Rs 10,000

The interesting part of the clause in the proposed bill is that if a juvenile is found driving a vehicle, the guarding will be held guilty in this case and case face up to three years of imprisonment and penalty of Rs 25,000.  The new law also helps the good riders those who come forward to help accident victims, by providing them protection from civil or criminal liability. It will be their choice whether to disclose their identity to the police or medical personnel or not.

It is high time that the government impose such fines for a better accordance of traffic rules by the Indian motorists. Basic road etiquette like giving way to ambulances will now hopefully be adhered to.
