IIT-Madras Question Paper Makes Headline

On Monday, 6th May, IIT-Madras students had the last exam of their semester. However, a question in the paper garnered a lot of attention as it was based on the current ground situation at Chepauk stadium in the 12th edition of VIVO Indian Premier League 2019. The question asked students, to help Captain MS Dhoni to opt whether to bat or bowl after winning the toss at the Quarterfinal 1, given the dew factor at the home ground. Chepauk stadium has been a slow pitch so far throughout the season, as batsmen struggled to score runs, and has a wicket-taking advantage as well. The question being, given the weather condition currently, the humidity at the start of the match would be 70% while the temperature is said to be 39°C, and is supposed to drop up to 27°C by the start of the 2nd innings, based on these conditions what should skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni does, if he wins the toss on May 7th Qualifier 1, and to explain their choice. The interesting question was made by Professor Vignesh. According to reports, Professor Vignesh Muthuvijayan wanted to make the question interesting and with relevance than just asking straightforward questions on condensation concept. As temperature drops are expected to drop the 2nd innings, the humidity is likely to rise and thus making the ball harder to hit, and hard for spinners to turn the ball as they please, and pacers to get the desired length. So, given the dew factor, and considering their bowling attacks, it would be wiser to field first. A student found the question very interesting, and they were confident with their explanations. This question made to the news when International Cricket Council (ICC) posted a photo of the question paper on their Twitter handle praising the efforts of IIT-Madras professor, who made the question with so much relevance. However, Chennai Super Kings opted to bat first on Tuesday, and lost the game, as they will be playing in the Eliminator to reach the Finals.
