India Rules British Cabinet

Boris Johnson successfully came up on the top defeating rival Jeremy Hunt to become the new Prime Minister of Britain, replacing former PM and Conservative Party Leader Theresa May. The journey of Johnson’s talks of British politics got wrapped up on Tuesday. On Wednesday, May met the Queen and formally resigned in the afternoon. Boris’s new Cabinet has also been announced and for the first time in the history of British politics, 3 MPs of Indian origin have made a place in the newly formed cabinet. The three MPs included in the cabinet are Priti Patel, Alok Sharma, and Rishi Sunak. The British cabinet comprises of 31 members in total and this time one-eighth of the members are from ethnic minorities, which is another first in Britain’s politics.

 Patel has taken over the role of Britain’s Home Secretary. Patel was born in the UK to Gujrati parents who lived in Uganda. Her parents were Indian immigrants in the African nation, who left Uganda shortly before the Asian community was exiled by Idi Amin. She will be in charge of national security, tackling crime, fighting terrorism and extremism, dealing with illegal immigration, and she will also be deciding whether to order the extradition of those wanted by other governments.   

Alok Sharma born in Agra, who was the minister of state for employment will now have the role of secretary of state for international development. The cabinet has another Indian origin MP who is the son-in-law of the co-founder of Infosys, Narayan Murthy. Rishi Sunak was a junior minister in the department for housing, local government, and communities. He has been promoted to chief secretary to the treasury and will attend the cabinet but not as a full member.
