Indian-Americans rule state elections

After the attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001, the United States lost its faith in a certain group of people. During that time lives were not so easy for the Muslims and even after that things changed forever. But things changed gradually and US came a long way from there to now where a Muslim woman became the first Muslim to be elected as the Virginia State Senate. Ghazala Hashmi's roots are here in our country; before shifting to the United States. Not only the first Muslim woman she is the first Indian-American to serve in the Virginia Senate. Hashmi, a democrat unseated Republican Senator Glen Sturtevant on Tuesday to represent the state's 10th Senate District. Ghazala got her bachelor's degree from Georgia Southern University and her Ph.D. from Emory University. She worked as the Founding Director of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Reynolds Community College in Richmond. During her campaign she emphasized that Ghazala Hashmi is an American Name. After the election at a victory party, Ghazala's supporters cheered for her, where she said,

"You've proven, that Ghazala is truly an American name."

She further said,

"This victory is not mine alone. It belongs to all of you who believed that we needed to make a progressive change here in Virginia, for all of you who felt that you haven't had a voice and believed in me to be yours in the General Assembly,"

Apart from Ghazala, three more Indian-American have won the state and local elections including Suhas Subramanyam, who served the former US president Barack Obama as the White House technology policy adviser; who has been elected to the Virginia State House of Representative.

Another Indian-American Mano Raju in California won the elections to remain San Francisco's Public Defender. In North Carolina, Dimple Ajmera won re-election to Charlotte City Council. After she took admission at the University of South California and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant.
