Instagram to Tackle ‘Social Media Pressure’

Social Media has captured the better part of our lives, as the humankind finds itself glued to their gadgets in most cases. The social media platform has been helpful for advertising or reaching the desired audience and even showcasing talents from the grassroots. On the other hand, the social media have also drawbacks like, the same advertisements often don’t come as black and white as it seems, but on the contrary it comes with an underlying derogatory understanding to one’s idea of ‘perfect body’.

Instagram came to sought the situation by taking a vow to restrict certain ads, like ‘flat tummy tea’, promotion of cosmetic procedures and dubious weight loss products linked to a commercial offer and discounts. Emma Collins, Instagram's public policy manager, said in an interview, "We want Instagram to be a positive place for everyone that uses it and this policy is part of our ongoing work to reduce the pressure that people can sometimes feel as a result of social media".

Consulting an expert Dr. Ysabel Gerrard, a professor at the University of Sheffield, stressed out on several matters about these ads, mostly which influences people to have a specific idea about beauty and contributes on how should one feel about their bodies matching up to the standards boasted in majority of the advertisements. In another problem which Instagram will focuses on is to remove or restrict advertisements that portrays ‘miraculous claim’ about a diet or weight loss product.

Instagram is expecting backlashes from such companies for change of policies, but the Instagram will be stern in such cases and ask them to act more responsibly. Such advertisements will now have to look after public-safety, and start accordingly to improve their products. The policy change will not only be applicable to Instagram but will also be adhered to Facebook as well, especially viewers under the age of 18 that promote such products and reduce the pressure people often face in social media.
