Kindly don't call your Hubby ‘Mota Hathi’

Calling names while arguing is a very petty thing do, back in 2016 the Delhi High court granted a divorce to a couple as the wife called her overweight husband ‘mota haathi’. As per the high court calling the man with such names subject him to mental cruelty and that is a ground for divorce. Justice Vipin Sanghi in this context said that the calling of names and hurling abuses such as ‘haathi’, ‘mota haathi’ and ‘mota elephant’ by the appellant in respect of her husband- even if he was overweight, is bound to strike at his self-respect and self-esteem’.

The woman was accused of threatening to burn herself down with kerosene and frame him and his family in a dowry case. She left the house with all her jewelry and other belongings. The woman even asked her husband to transfer his property in her name, if he wants her to live a ‘devoted wife’.

The high court stated

“Such events are clearly destructive of the matrimonial bond and would naturally give rise to a bonafide and genuine belief and apprehension in the mind of the respondent that is not safe for him to peacefully and mentally continue the relationship.”

The judge states that these kinds of incidents harm the matrimonial bond and create an unhealthy environment for both the parties to live in.
