Kolkata Outshines Other Cities

It is a moment of pride when work is appreciated, not only nationally but internationally as well. It is that moment for Kolkata and the nation as a whole. The city’s 15-km long metro corridor is collecting appreciations and applauds for its engineering. Kolkata already stands out with its underground metro service, and soon it will be out of the league for every other city in India with the introduction of underwater metro service. 1.4 km out of 15 km of the metro tunnel will run through the bottom of the Hooghly river. The underground metro service started in 1984, and no other state or city has that facility, it ferries thousands of people every day. The project commenced in 2009 and is expected to be completed by 2021.

The underwater metro will run between Howrah and Saltlake, it will be underwater for about one minute between the Howrah and Mahakaran metro stations. The underwater tunnel is 30 meters beneath the riverbed. The east and westbound twin tunnels are 520-metres long. Even the Railway Minister said earlier this week that the tunnel has been constructed using the world’s finest technology. The railway official believes that by 2035 one million passengers will be using this service. It will be of great convenience as it will connect two of the major railway stations of the city as well as the state; Howrah and Sealdah.
