I used a basic phone, only for calls and text messages” he said.

Kartikey said that he was expecting to be amongst the top 10 but achieving the AIR-1 score was a dream come true. He scored a 93.5% in his HSC examinations and was thoroughly focused on acquiring an IIT seat. He said that the faculty of his institute were extremely helpful in the process and helped him tackle all questions and also gave him intensive coaching.

The topper said that mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan is his idol. He also qualified for numerous Olympiads in his school life including Indian National Physics Olympiad, Indian Chemistry Olympiad, Indian National Olympiads in Astronomy and Indian National Junior Science Olympiad.

With a score of 346 out of 372, he can pick any college, for any course but he wants to choose IIT Bombay. When asked about the secret to his success, he said that he never let himself be stressed and took timely breaks to de-stress his mind by either having a chat with his parents or playing badminton with his brother.

To increase the representation of girls, the supernumerary quota was increased to 17%. The eligibility criteria was increased this year too, to increase the pool of students. This year, Delhi produced four out of 10 toppers, while madras zone and Bombay zone each produced 3.

The last time Maharashtra had a topper was almost one and a half decade ago. The topper, Yashodhan Kanoria is now a professor at Columbia University, New York City.
