Making the World a better place for Elephants

India has a rich history of worshipping animals as deities and treating them with kindness and love. Recent instances of animal abuse recite a different tale altogether. Pet shelters for abandoned pets and roadside strays, as well as hospitals run by groups of like-minded people are trying hard to help the animals in need. India’s first elephant hospital was one of its kind, owing to the fact that these majestic beasts are hunted down relentlessly, are involved in railway accidents and their injuries are not easy to be attended to. Due to their amicable nature, elephants are forcefully abducted for circuses, temples and other sects of the Indian industry.

Wildlife SOS is a non-profit organisation that saves wild animals across the country and opened India’s first elephant hospital in Uttar Pradesh. The group also attends to leopards, turtles and other endangered species since its commencement in 1995. Veterinarians examine all the elephants brought in the hospital carefully, thanks to the fully equipped technology that makes it possible to analyse the elephants head to toe. Most of them suffer from malnutrition and physical destabilisations. Many of the patient elephants suffer from arthritis, which is extremely painful for the animal as well as difficult to treat. Doctors use cold laser therapy and therapeutic ultrasonography to ease the complications. Proper nutritious meals are served to the animals brought in the shelter, which is carefully monitored by a specialised team. The laboratories possess ultrasound, laser therapy, hydrotherapy, radiology and medical hoists to carry and place large animals at proper stations for treatments. Since its opening, the hospital has successfully treated 25 elephants and has safely transferred them to the elephant sanctuaries maintained by Wildlife SOS- The Elephant conservation and Care centre at Mathura and Elephant rescue centre at Yamunanagar.

It is our duty to understand that animals are our friends and neighbours. Abused animals are in dire need of help, and it is our responsibility to ensure their well-being,
