Nagaland Hornbill festival broke all previous Records

The famous ‘Hornbill festival’ of Nagaland which is held every year in the first week of December is getting more footfalls this year. This year it  It is an iconic festival of North east and also called as festival of festivals. 17 tribal groups of Nagaland took part in this festival. They are Naga, Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Khiamniungan, Kachari, Kuki, Konyak, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sumi, Yimchungru and Zeliang. All the tribal groups showcase their traditional dancing and singing art in their different dialect. Hornbill Festival showcases a mélange of cultural displays under one roof.

Each year this grand carnival, organized by the State Tourism of Arts and Culture Department, Government of Nagaland. More than 60% of Naga populations are dependent on agriculture. It is believed that Hornbill is nothing but a festival of agriculture. It is the Beginning of a new harvesting season. This year held 1 to 10 December.

The festival held in the Kisama village which is situated almost 12 kilometers from Kohima. All tribes of Nagaland take part in this festival as they believe it is sacred festival. Nagaland and people enjoy the colourful performances, crafts, sports, food fairs, games and ceremonies. Traditional arts which include paintings, wood carvings, and sculptures are also on display.Hornbill Festival leads to a revival, preservation and assimilation of their culture, with the different Naga tribes interacting with one another, as well as the rest of the country.

In this harvesting festival Nagaland government is prioritizing in organic farming. Advisor to horticulture department, Mathung Yanthan, draft state policy for organic cultivation is being prepared."Nagaland joins the rest of the world in promoting and developing organic agriculture for sustainability," he said. Yanthan, also a legislator, said over 800 hectares in the state have been brought under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region, a central scheme for increasing certified organic production.The official said the establishment of Farmer Producer Companies (FPC) will help cultivators better market their produce. Yanthan urged farmers to blend modern technologies with traditional agricultural practices as complete technological shift might not be feasible in the hilly terrain of the state.
