NASA to set up robot hotel

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have decided to set up a ‘robot hotel’ outside the International Space Station. This will be made possible through the upcoming launch of the Robotic Tool Stowage (RiTS) which happens to be a protective storage unit for critical robotic tools. RiTS will be launched aboard the 19th SpaceX commercial resupply mission. Robots need a place to be stationed in space too, and this robot hotel will provide the robotic tools the heat and physical protection from radiation it needs. RiTS is a protective storage unit for critical robotic tools which will provide physical protection from radiation and micro meteoroids, or tiny, high-speed objects hurtling through space. Mark Neuman, RiTS hardware manager said, “For each of its stored tools, RiTS will provide heat and physical protection from radiation and micro meteoroids, or tiny, high-speed objects hurtling through space. Its thermal system maintains ideal temperatures for the instruments, helping them stay functional”. The robot hotel’s first residents will be two Robotic External Leak Locators (RELL) which are used to detect external leaks from the space station, since they are equipped with spectrometers capable of detecting the presence of gases such as ammonia. Currently the International Space Station has two RELL units on board and they will be kept safely in the RiTS after it is set up outside the space station. The Satellite Servicing Projects Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt has developed RiTS in partnership with NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
