Necessity as a Catalyst for Invention

The dominance of humans in every field, with their timely inventions has made their progress and stay more prominent in the stage of evolution. Humans has emerged as the most intelligent species to create several things with their ideas. But necessity is still the driving forces that urges humans to work hard on their inventions.

Similarly, a Tamil Nadu man, named S Saravana Muthu, a welding laborer living in Nagarcoil, faced with a complicated situation when his wife became bedridden, and to help her in her troubled times, he came up with an idea to invent a toilet bed that would help bedridden persons. His wife was bedridden for 2 months after a surgery which urged him to develop a bed with an attached toilet pot and a remote controlled flush, that ensures patients to help themselves without anybody else’s assistance when he realized the difficulties faced by those who cannot move by themselves.

40 years old, S Saravana Muthu won the second prize at the National Innovation Award competition held by the National Innovation Foundation for his helpful innovation. With his invention garnering some recognition and he also got the opportunity to have a talk with former President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam, who gave additional motivation and also told him about the National Innovation Foundation, a government undertaken organization to help strengthen technological innovations. To his utter surprise he won the prize of Rs 2 lakh prize money and received the award from current President of India Ram Nath Kovind, along with the Innovation award and the reimbursements of Rs 35,000 to cover the costs of the prototype.

However, with rising demand as well from all over the country, due to financial constraints he is unable to work on the project. But he is optimistic to take up new inventions which includes a fuel-car. So far, he has achieved his goal with hard work and added motivation from his own need to help his ailing wife and most importantly urges to help more if given the chance in future.
