New Director of London Nehru Centre

‘Secret of the Nagas’ and ‘Sita- Warrior of Mithila’ famed author Amish Tripathi has been bestowed with some extra responsibilities. He has been named as the director of the Nehru Centre in London. The Nehru Centre is a cultural center that aims to promote cultural exchange between the United Kingdom and India. It was founded in 1992 with former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi as the founder-director.

The Nehru Centre is under the flagship of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) abroad. Amish will be taking over from the diplomat Srinivas Gotru. The tenure of the post is four-years. The news was officially announced on Thursday by the ICCR president Vinay Sahasrabudhe himself. Sahasrabudhe said,

We want every center under the ICCR to be more vibrant and proactive to generate a proper understanding of the Indian culture abroad.”

He further added that this is a routine process and Tripathi was chosen on merit. Brilliant playwright-actor Girish Karnad who passed away a few days back also served as the director of the Nehru Centre. The center has seen many political appointees as its director. Diplomat Pavan Varma was the first bureaucrat to lead the cultural wing of the Indian high commission in London. Varma, who was appointed as the director in 2005 believes that Amish has the potential to change things for the betterment of the Centre and both the nations.
