New government pushes EV policy for green transport, to waive off registration fees and road tax for EV buyers

India has been faced with the woes of pollution for a long time now. One of the main contributors to it is vehicular exhaust. The government is now working on a ground breaking policy to push the electronic vehicle movement in India.

This policy will instill that if an electronic vehicle is registered then the registration process will be completed that day itself and also the registration fee that would have been applicable would be waived. This is merely the initial idea that the group has come up with. The collaborative effort of various government transport committees is to completely stop the manufacture of diesel and petrol based vehicles by 2030.

The registration of a vehicle doesn’t come under GST reforms and hence varies from state to state, ranging from 3% to 14% in various states, the pricing is relatively higher for diesel vehicles than petrol cars.

Owing to India’s huge population, if this policy implemented properly, a mass conversion from fuel based cars to electric cars is expected. The registration fees for basic models can go up to 70-80,000, this means that the pricing on your car could be reduced by almost a lakh.

With the wave of electric mobility, the government also needs to invest in constructing charging stations across cities. The government needs to focus on two wheelers and three wheelers alike. The government is also planning on the introduction of electric buses in major cities, while there are already multiple electric buses running, they plan on strengthening its number gradually with time.

Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world is desperate to push this policy forward to be more adoptable to the public. The Delhi government has promised to being 1000 DTC run electric buses by the end of 2019. While the gross EV market has risen by 124%, in 2019 but the sales percentage of four wheelers dropped by 40%. This might be one of the main reasons the government is working hard to push the EV wave.

While this policy is a good way to promote green transport, the time taken to turn a population of 1.3 billion people onto EV’s will be a long and tedious journey.
