New Policies of Draft Policy

The draft National Education Policy proposed that can alter the current face of the education system. According to the draft, children can enter the world of formal education from the age of three years. They are planning on expanding the Right to Education act and cover the three of preschool before class 1.

The committee of the draft NEP announced this proposal at the Canara First Grade College on Sunday during a discussion. At present the Indian education system runs on the 10+2+3 policy that covers the 15 years of education. Draft National Education Policy proposed dividing this 15 years into 5+3+3+4 pattern covering pre-primary till 12th standard. Professor M K Sridhar a member of the committee also said that under this system the formal education begins at the age three years previously which was five years.

The early childhood education was taken care of by the Ministry of Women and Child Development through private pre-schools and anganwadis, but the draft policy wants to change that too. They want the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. By the end of this year, the draft policy will work out a plan with the help of an inter-ministerial task force. Although the anganwadis have done a commendable job in improving the health and nutrition they are still weak in case of education. The draft policy says,

“While providing some essential cognitive stimulation, play, and daycare, most anganwadis have remained relatively light on education aspects of ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education). Anganwadis are currently quite deficient in supplies and infrastructure for education; as a result, they tend to contain more children in the 2-4-year age range; they also have few teachers trained in or specially dedicated to early childhood education.”

A new framework for the children in the age group of 3-8 years has been suggested by the draft policy as they believe that children in private pre-schools lack the “school readiness competencies when they joined primary school”. The ultimate motto of the draft policy is to improve the education system and take it more seriously.
