No More Sugary-Drinks!

A glass or can of cold fizzy drink on a hot summer afternoon or with our favorite food is pure bliss, but that sugary drink is the sweet poison that slowly leads us to our demise. In a first Singapore has taken a bold step of putting a ban on ads for unhealthy drinks with high sugar content. This is said to be their latest move in the ongoing "war on diabetes". Senior Minister of State for city-state's Ministry of Health, Edwin Tong said that the ban applying to "the least healthy" sugar-sweetened beverages, will cover all media platforms including print, broadcast and online. The press release says soft drinks, juices, yogurt drinks, and instant coffee would all be affected by this new regulation.  This ground-breaking decision came after conducting a public consultation survey. They have also declared that survey will continue in order to gather consumer and industry feedback in the next few months before announcing further details on its implementation next year. The city has been dealing with a growing aging population and survey shows that around 13.7 percent of adults suffer from diabetes in Singapore. This is only a beginning and there are plans of exploring the possibility of sugar tax or ban.
