PM Narendra Modi to be honored for Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be honored later this month with yet another prestigious award. This time it will be presented by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to honor him for his flagship Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan. PM Modi will be honored for his leadership and commitment towards the Swachch Bharat Mission, which is a nationwide campaign to achieve clean roads, streets and infrastructure of the country.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s office recently tweeted to announce that PM Modi will be honored with the award during his visit to the United States this month. He will be attending the annual session of the UN General Assembly and will address global leaders, corporate executives at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum during his visit to the United Nations.

Dr. Singh said, “Another award, another moment of pride for every Indian as PM Modi’s diligent and innovative initiatives bring laurels from across the world. PM Modi to receive the award from Bill Melinda Gates Foundation for #SwachhBharatAbhiyaan during his visit to the United States.”

Swachch Bharat Abhiyan was launch on 2nd October 2014. The campaign aims to achieve the goal of ‘Clean India’ by 2nd October 2019 which will mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. This initiative aimed to make India 'Open Defecation Free' by 2019. The foundation’s primary goals are to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty across the globe. It is headquartered in Seattle, Washington of the United States. In October 2018, Gates had praised Prime Minister for the improving sanitation in India through the Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan. Under this campaign, till now, more than 9 crore toilets have been built in villages across the country to eradicate open defecation and currently 98 per cent of India’s villages have sanitation coverage instead of 38 per cent four years ago.
