Rain Adds Misery after Delay

Monsoon is entitled to carry the relief from scorching Summer heat, and brings life back to the dried soil. After a long Summer, everyone waits for the rain to start cooling the rising mercury to a bearable state. While Heavy rain at one side brings relief to all; extreme rain can be disastrous. This year, while the monsoon entered late, heavy rain across many states of India has turned out to be devastating.

Extreme rain conditions in Assam has been going above the danger level, resulting in floods and landslides across the state, claim 17 lives so far in 33 district of the state alone. More than 4000 villages affected and about 45 lakh people affected by the flood water that are way above the danger level. The Kaziranga National Park, the largest home to one horned rhinos has also been affected by the deluge, with animals looking for higher grounds. Bramhaputra and other rivers are said to be flowing above the danger level causing destruction. The most affected districts are namely Dhemaji, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hojai, Nagaon, Golaghat, MajuliJorhat, Sivsagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia

This is not the only state affected by the arrival of monsoon. Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana among Northern Indian states and Kerela among the South Indian states, have been tragically battered with red alerts being announced in Kerela for over 204mm rain to pour in next 24 hours only across 6 districts. Bihar has also been affected by the heavy rain in Nepal and subsequent massive discharge of water in rivers led to flash floods in Bihar, claiming 33 lives so far in 33 districts of the state.

Assam has been aided with several flood reliefs, but there is time before it can be tamed under control and most importantly, nature’s fury to wear out. While heavy rain is affecting almost half of the states, no rain is also creating a miserable situation in metro cities like Kolkata and Delhi.
