Raksha Bandhan preparations for the Prime Minister

The members of the Muslim Mahila Foundation in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh have been preparing special handmade rakhis for Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Rakshabandhan which will be celebrated on August 15 this year.

Elated by the parliament’s decision on the Triple Talaq Bill, which criminalises instant divorce among Muslims, the women called PM Modi their elder brother who protected them from the “evil” practice. Nazima Ansari, a member of the Muslim Mahila Foundation said, “The Muslim women from our foundation living in Banaras (Varanasi) had first sent a rakhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji in 2013. Since then, the ritual has been continuing.”

Another woman named Huma Bano of Rampura said “It was only because of Modi that Triple Talaq is criminalized. He is like an elder brother of all Muslim women in the country.”

On the other part of the country in the city of Dehradun, a group of women in Ajivika Education under the campaign ‘Nation First’, has been preparing rakhis for PM Narendra Modi, a few Cabinet ministers and the army men who are guarding the borders.

“We have made all our rakhis with grains to send out a clear message that the government has made efforts for the upliftment of farmers. And we are happy that they have also removed Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. We are making these rakhis to thank them for making such moves,” said Prateeksha Thakur, a volunteer.

Sejal Thakur, another volunteer, said, “We have made rakhis based on the theme of Independence Day. We have made flags and India’s map on our rakhis. It is good that the government has removed Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and I thank the army and the government for giving us protection.”

Schoolgirls across the state of Gujarat also sent rakhis along with handwritten letter to the PM as a gesture of protection and well-being.
