Rs 251.55 crores aid for Assam Flood Relief

Assam is currently in a very critical flood situation with all 33 districts of the state being heavily affected. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), has reported that the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are flowing above the danger level in most of the affected districts, including Guwahati. The flood situation has claimed 17 lives and affected over 45 lakh people in 4,620 villages, with 1,01,085 people taking refuge in 226 relief camps. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are working very hard to rescue people from the flood affected areas. Due to the very critical condition of the state, the central government has released a grant of Rs 251.55 crores for the Assam Relief Fund to carry out relief operations in the affected areas. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Health Minister of Assam took to Twitter to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the assistance. He twitted, “I thank Hon PM Sri @narendramodi and HM Sri @AmitShah for prompt release of ₹251.55 Cr grants-in-aid to Assam towards the central share of SDRF for 2019-20”. Over 27,000 hectares of farmland is currently under flood waters and the affected districts include Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hojai, Nagaon, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.
