Sri Lanka shifts its naval base to Chinese controlled port

Sri Lanka is currently on a move to shift a naval base to a port, built and maintained by China. The base which was in the district of Galle will now be moved 125 kilometers east to Hambantota. Sri Lanka hopes that this move will tighten security at a harbor which China could use for military purposes, as speculated by other nations. US, India, and Japan have already raised concerns related to this issue, that China might use the port as a naval base. But the Sri Lankan government and Chinese embassy have fully denied these claims. The government reported that there is a clause in the agreement for the port deal which clearly states that the port cannot be used for military purpose. The construction work for the base is on the process and a naval unit has already been assigned to the new port.
