Students convert noise to electricity

Unwanted noise is not only considered a health hazard, but also a menace to the environment. Fortunately, a group of young students at PSHS-WVC or Philippine Science High School- Western Visayas Campus has invented a very easy and simple device that converts this noise into electricity.

The main brain behind this device was a few of class 11 students including Raphael Dequilla and Nico Serrato. The gadget actively generates electricity from any noise captured by its speaker. The vibration created by the sound source is caught by the device and this vibration then creates electricity.

The practical uses of this device are numerous. It is said that the gadget can create enough electricity to light a bulb. Thus, it can easily be used during running traffic where the device would catch the sound energy created by the noise of the vehicles and convert it to electricity which would light the street bulbs. This technique is exactly opposite to how a speaker would work.

Although this concept is not exactly fresh, the execution of this idea has shown some new techniques. This inexpensive and easy device not only would solve the problem of electricity in rural areas but also, abate the problem of sound pollution in urban cities. The team thus won the Silver Award during the Young Inventors Challenge 2019, held in Malaysia.
