Supermarkets to do away with stickers on fruits

Good news for people who find stickers on fruits annoying! Well, they are annoying if you’re trying to have a fruit on the go or maybe if you care about the environment. The stickers on fruits and vegetables will be soon discontinued due to a new plastics pledge. The major supermarkets of Britain including Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Morrissons and Asda have decided to get rid of single-use plastic items by the end of 2020 as a result of which they will do away with the stickers as well. The retailers will not be using unnecessary plastic items including the stickers since these materials are difficult for consumers to recycle and only four per cent is recycled. The stickers were used to let the cashiers know about the product and its costs. These stickers also used to let consumers know whether the product is organic or not. One of the officials of the supermarket’s guild said, "Some have provided additional training to staff and introduced visual cue cards at the till. Others have moved to compostable stickers. I’ve also seen previously that M&S were looking at lasering dates on to their avocados! So there is a range of alternatives being explored". Another official said, “Moving forward we face significant challenges, particularly around films and flexible packaging, increasing recycling, and development of re-use and refill models. These will be our top priorities as we work urgently towards a world where plastic is valued and doesn’t pollute the environment".
