Telecom regulator sets incoming voice call ringer at 30 seconds

The issue over the duration of incoming voice call has been a major apple of discord this year. This topic was hugely debated over by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. While Bharti Airtel wanted to keep the duration time of the incoming call at 45 seconds, Reliance Jio wanted to keep it short between 20 and 25 seconds. On top of that, Vodafone demanded to keep an average ringer time at 30 seconds.

In between all this conflict between the telecom companies, the TRAI or Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had submitted a consultation paper on this matter on 16th September.  This consultation paper has finally found colours, where the TRAI finally announces to fix the maximum duration of incoming voice call ringer to be 30 seconds.

The incoming call ringer duration is of pivotal importance to the Telecom companies. A short course of incoming voice call duration would save the companies spectrum resources. However, a longer duration of incoming call ringer would fetch the telecom company more revenue. The incoming call ringer is the duration of time during which an incoming call is neither received nor rejected.

The telecom network of Jio prefers to keep their incoming ringer short. Mahipal Singh, associate vice-president of Jio says, “94% calls on Jio’s network are answered in 25 seconds”. However, other networks like airtel believes that incoming voice call ringer should be according to the network preference. Despite all the controversies, it has been decided that the ringer time for all the telecom networks would be set at 30 seconds. The ringing time impacts the network efficiency and thus should be regulated.
