Trichy boys’ ‘Safe Mode Pissing System’

Young minds are quite impressionable, the surroundings have a very deep impact on them. There is a reason why people say that the youths are the future of a nation. At a village in Tiruchirappalli, a group of boys took charge of giving their school a proper toilet. Back in 2016, the Union Middle School didn’t have a proper toilet for the boys, it was just a wall. Five 13-year-old boys namely Supikpandian, Santhosh, Dhyanithi, Ragul, and Prabharan came up with an innovative idea in order to construct a toilet with urinals. Basically, the boys had to urinate on the wall which was both unhygienic and gross as it emanated sickening urine smell in the area around the toilet. Splashes of urine bounced off the wall and ruined their uniform and feet. It also resulted in various urinary infections among the boys. They fashioned 20-liter water cans into urinals and they call them ‘Safe Mode Pissing System

Taking help from their mentor Kesavan D to cut the cans longitudinally to prevent urine splashing back. Not only that, the group connected the urinals to a sewage system for the proper disposal of the urine. The urinals were connected to a central tap that provides fresh water to flush out the urine. This innovation solved two problems with one solution; first, they built a proper toilet for the boys in school and second, they illustrated a great example of reusing plastic. The boys received the ‘Boldest Idea’ award at a national design competition ‘Design for Change’. They won a cash prize of Rs. 50, 000 and their story were selected from 3, 600 stories.
