UGC to allow pursuing multiple degrees?

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is most likely to allow students to pursue multiple degrees simultaneously soon. If put into practice, the students will be able to pursue multiple degrees from different universities or the same university itself through different modes like distance mode, online mode or part time mode. The UGC has already set up a panel to come to a conclusion regarding this, and it will be headed by its Vice Chairman Bhushan Patwardhan. But, this is not the first time that UGC is looking into this matter. Earlier in 2012, UGC had set up such a similar panel to review the issue of pursuing multiple degrees simultaneously but the issue, however, was discarded. The panel of 2012 was headed by then Vice Chancellor of Hyderabad University, Furqan Qamar who had recommended that a student may be allowed to pursue two degrees simultaneously if he/she is willing to. The 2012 panel report stated, “Two degree programs under regular mode may not be allowed simultaneously as it may create logistic, administrative and academic problems. A student pursuing a degree program under regular mode may be allowed to pursue a maximum of one certificate, diploma, advanced diploma, PG diploma program simultaneously either in regular or open and distance mode in the same university or from other institutions”. An official of UGC said, “It has now been decided to revisit the idea because technology has brought in lot of changes. There are vast majority of people who want to pursue specialized courses besides their regular degree programs”.
