Volcano festival in Indonesia

Do you know that Yadnya Kasada is a festival that is widely celebrated by the Tenggerese, a Javanese ethnic group? The villagers of the Ngadas were said to be the descendants of the Majapahit Kingdom in the 13th century and they are the ones who have carried this tradition forward.

Wringin Lawang temple is an iconic temple and at one point of time, people were said to have taken refuge along the slopes of Mt. Bromo which is an active volcano.
On this occasion, devotees move towards Mt. Bromo to pray together. The believers throw offerings in the crater which mainly include livestock, fruits, vegetables etc. Interestingly, people even climb down the crater to retrieve the sacrificed goods in spite of being aware of the danger involved. The sacrificed items are considered good luck charms.

Foreign tourists join others at the mountain peak and throw coins in the crater. Couples also pray for children by sacrificing valuables at the crater.

The event took place this year on 30th June 2018.
