Walking Fish is Threat to Nature

Would you believe if we told you that fishes are walking on the land? It is hard
to believe right? But trust us it is true and it's happening! A species of fish
commonly known as the northern snakehead was caught in a Gwinnett
County Pond has created quite a sensation. The snakehead fish was caught
earlier this month and as per the Georgia Department of Natural Resources'
Wildlife Resources Division this species has been found in the Georgia Waters for the first time. Snakehead fish was first spotted in the wild in the San
Bernardino County's Silverwood Lake in California, US.

The fish is a native to East Asia and was sold in pet stores, live food fish
markets and restaurants in several major cities. But in 2002, the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service added the species to its list of injurious wildlife. The fish can
survive up to 4-days on land, if kept moist and during droughts, snakeheads
can remain immobile but alive in the mud. These fish have an air sac which is
similar to a lung where they can store atmospheric oxygen just like the lung.
The fish draws oxygen from these air sacs above its gills, that helps them
survive in waters with low oxygen level and on land as well for a few days.

It feeds on other fish, amphibians, crawfish and even small animals such as
mice, as per the research of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
These fish are harmful to nature as they can out-compete or even displace other
aquatic species, hence the officials are asking people to kill them as soon as
they are being spotted. Not only that officials want people to take their pictures
and report their catch to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife
Resources Division Fisheries office. The snakehead fish has already been
spotted in 14 other states.
