World Malaria Day

People around the world are observing World Malaria Day today on 25th April. It is observed to acknowledge and recognise the global efforts to control malaria; and to raise awareness about it. The theme for this year is “Zero Malaria Starts with Me”.

In the nineteenth century Ronald Ross discovered the avian malaria.

World Malaria Day was first observed in May 2007. It was established by the World Health Organisation’s decision-making body, World Health Assembly. The main objective behind it was to provide education and understanding of malaria. It is transmitted through mosquito bite and few of its symptoms are fever accompanied with chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, fatigue, sweating, chest pain and cough.

Advancement in science and medicines has brought down the malaria cases and is progressing with every passing day. It is important that we the citizens also actively take part in eradicating this disease completely. Keeping our surroundings clean is the most important step in the fight against malaria. Our country India is not among the top three malaria affected countries.
