World Suicide Prevention Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) is celebrating Suicide Prevention Day today on the 10th of September. Suicide, an act of killing one’s own self is one of the major reasons behind deaths of nearly 800,000 people around the world each year, which is more than deaths caused by war and homicide or cancer. Various mental disorders like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse can be reasons behind this action of suicide. Suicides are basically impulsive actions due to stress which can be dealt with quite easily if there is awareness about it. People who have previous history of suicide attempts are at higher risks for future attempts and awareness is the only thing that can save them. This is why WHO celebrates this day - Suicide Prevention Day, in order to spread awareness on this critical issue. WHO Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “Despite progress, one person still dies every 40 seconds from suicide. Every death is a tragedy for family, friends and colleagues. Yet suicides are preventable. We call on all countries to incorporate proven suicide prevention strategies into national health and education programmes in a sustainable way”. WHO has launched a one-month campaign on this World Suicide Prevention Day for awareness on suicides around the globe. WHO will also celebrate World Mental Health Day on 10th October whose main focus will be suicide prevention.
