World’s Highest Lake Found In Nepal

A newly-discovered lake in Nepal is likely to set a new record of being the world's highest lake. The lake is located at Singarkharka of Chame Rural Municipality, Manang. The local people unofficially named the lake as Singer Lake because it is situated at the northeast direction of Singar Himal. According to Chame Rural Municipality Chair Lokendra Ghale, the lake was discovered about a few months ago by a team of mountaineers. The elevation of the lake is 5200m and approximate length and wide is 1.5km and 600m respectively, which is yet to be officially verified. “The lake would be the world’s highest lake if its altitude of 5000-plus meters is officially verified,” he added.

The lake can be reached after 18 hours trek from Manang district headquarters, Chame. It’s 24 km from Chame. The most suitable time to visit the lake, which offers a panoramic view of about a dozen peaks towards the north, is between the months of July and November. The lake has Mt Manaslu to the east, Mt Damodar to the west, Mt Annapurna and Mt Lamjung to the south, and Mt Peri in the Tibet to the north. The authority concerned of the rural municipality hoped that the newly found lake would help promote tourism in the district once it is declared as the world’s highest lake.

As of now Tilicho Lake, 4919m is known as the highest lake in the world situated in Manang district. Once officially confirmed the height of Singar Lake by the government of Nepal, Tilicho Lake is going to be the world’s second-highest lake.
