World’s second-largest diamond purchased by Louis Vuitton

Last year in April, Lucara Diamond Corporation discovered the second-largest diamond from the Karowe mine in Botswana. The diamond was named Sewelo meaning ‘rare find’ in Tswana, a language spoken in Botswana. Former president of the Antwerp Diamond Exchange estimated the cost of the second largest diamond and according to him, it is around USD 50 million.

1,758-carat Sewelo is roughly the size of a tennis ball and now this diamond will embellish a collection of Louis Vuitton jewelry. The stalwart of the fashion industry Louis Vuitton recently purchased the Sewelo from the diamond company. Chief Executive of Louis Vuitton revealed a lot of things except the exact price of the diamond. He said that this move will surely surprise some of their key rivals, but he did mention that the price of the diamond was in millions. He further said,

“Nobody expects us to put such an emphasis on high jewelry. I think it will spice things up a bit. Wake up the industry,”

Louis Vuitton has been pushing into fine jewelry, since the launch of their flagship store in Paris’ Place Vendome and a few months, back Louis Vuitton parent company LVMH announced the acquisition of Tiffany. Louis Vuitton also hired the former Tiffany Design Director Francesca Amphitheatrof. The biggest diamond is 3,106 carat Cullinan discovered near Pretoria in South Africa in 1905.
